1/43 Ellesmere Memorial

Memorial to Harriet, widow of the 1st Earl of Ellesmere.
1868. By T. G. Jackson as a result of a competition judged
by Street. Stone. A tabernacle topped by a tall pinnacle
with rich elaboration in a Gothic style. A battered plinth
supports cusped arches on each of 4 sides which are framed
by crocketted gables and corner pinnacles. Inside the arches
is an unexpected stumpy column which supports the 2 stages
above. The middle stage has elaborate niches which house
figures of charity, munificence, prudence and piety. Gablets
in the top stage stand on small columns and the whole is
topped by a cross finial. Small figures of a cotton-worker,
a collier, and 2 factory girls have been removed.
