Ellesmere Memorial

GV
II
Memorial to Harriet, widow of the first Earl of Ellesmere. 1868. By T.G Jackson as a result of a competition judged by Street. Stone. A tabernacle topped by a tall pinnacle with rich elaboration in a Gothic style. A battered plinth supports cusped arches on each of four sides which are framed by crocketted gables and corner pinnacles. Inside the arches is an unexpected stumpy column which supports the two stages above. The middle stage has elaborate niches which house figures of charity, munificence, prudence and piety. Gablets in the top stage stand on small columns and the whole is topped by a cross finial. Small figures of a cotton-worker, a collier, and two factory girls have been removed.
