5/59 Thorncliff Barn

G.V. II

Tithe barn. C17 or early C18. Squared rubble with hammer-
dressed stone dressings and corrugated plastic roof. 5 bays
with central opposed cart entries. Projecting plinth, stone
quoins, 2 rows of vents and 3 buttresses which are weathered
4 times. A fourth buttress has been removed from bay 1
during some rebuilding when a C19 door and window were
inserted. 2 buttresses (as above) to right gable which has
an inserted door (C19) and a loft hatch above. The rear is
identical, but retains all 4 buttresses. Interior: 4 king-
post fish-bone pegged oak trusses with slightly cambered tie
beams. Some of the original truss members have been
replaced. C20 lean-to stabling at rear is not of special
interest.
