Description

SD 91 NW LITTLEBOROUGH ROCHDALE CANAL
1/51 Lock No. 46 and
- Windy Bank Bridge

G.V. II
Lock and tailbridge. Between 1794 and 1798. William Jessop
engineer. Hammer-dressed stone. Double upper gates, recesses
to accommodate 2 sets of lower gates (neither of which now
exist) and tailbridge adjoining at south. Winding gear
remains. The lock walls reveal stonemason's marks.
Elliptical-arched tail bridge has stone band and parapet
walls constructed of large vertically set stones. A
retaining wall sweeps down to the lower level and
incorporates boatman's steps. The bridge is of a later date,
probably c.1840.
