Cotton spinning mill (formerly for mule spindles). 1908 by G Temperley & Son architects of Bolton. Red brick with stone and buff terracotta dressings; iron (or steel) girders with concrete floors. Aligned east/west.
Five storeyed mill with two-storeyed carding room projecting to south; external engine house with rope race to end wall of mill; adjoining boiler house and stack (to south east); stair/sprinkler tower (to north east).Twelve x nine bays, the long elevations with three windows per bay, each bay divided by shallow pilaster buttresses; plain buff bonding at lintel level. Cambered window arches to top floor only; low parapet raised over central bay Tower rises two storeys above parapet level; show front (north) with central window to each stage under variedly treated entablatures; segmental pediment above parapet level (of mill) to each face; three round-headed windows beneath parapet with low corner turrets. Engine house (with tall round-headed windows with glazing bars) and boiler house with low parapets. Stack of circular section with moulded and panelled cap.
Interior: circular section-columns with simple shaped capitals.
A good, complete example of a late Edwardian mill; it was lit by electricity generated by its own dynamo. It was designed to accommodate 87,072 mule spindles and 12,880 ring spindles.
