Locks and bridges. 1816. For Leeds and Liverpool Canal.
Stone with timber or iron gates. Ground paddles operated by
levers, a feature of this canal. Each lock has number in
roman numerals in sunk panel at lower end on south side,
e.g. "L No. I". Bridges have elliptical arches with
rusticated voussoirs and keys flanked by date, flat bands
over and end piers and parapets. Lock No. I next to lock
keeper's cottage on Withington Lane (q.v.). Top gates are
iron, bottom gates timber. Platform has granite setts and
steps to towpath. Timber footbridge. Bridge No.58 adjoins,
arch replaced by concrete beams. Lock No. II has overflow
channel, timber gates, abutments with steps to lower end of
platform, and timber footbridge. Bridge No. 57 is complete.
Lock No. III has iron gates, overflow channel and
footbridge. Lock No. IV has iron gates, overflow channel and
lower end abutments; footbridge. Lock No. V has iron upper
gates and timber lower gates. Bridge No. 56 adjoins and is
complete. Lock No. VI has overflow channel wood upper and
iron lower gates and timber footbridge. Lock No. VII has
timber upper and iron lower gates, culverted overflow; iron
footbridge and ordinary ground paddles. Lock No. VIII has
iron gates, culvert overflow and footbridge. Lock No. IX has
iron gates, overflow channel abutments with steps and timber
footbridge; ordinary ground paddles. Lock No. X has timber
upper and iron lower gates, timber bridge and overflow
channel. Lock No. XI has timber upper and iron lower gates,
overflow channel and timber footbridge. Lock No. XII has
timber upper and iron lower gates, overflow channel and
timber footbridge. Lock No. XIII has iron gates and overflow
channel, Bridge No. 55 adjoins, arch replaced by timber
bridge. Locks No. 5 to 13 and Bridges No. 55 and 56 are in
Ince-in-Makerfield UD.
