Police Station. c1850. Brick with stone dressings, slate
roof.2 storeys and 3 bays. Stone plinth, 1st floor sill
course, top frieze and cornice: Centre bay projects and
forms base of short tower. Ground floor windows have stone
lintels and all windows are sashed with glazing bars.
Entrance on return of centre bay has rusticated architrave
with lion's head to keystone, stone plaque above. 1st floor
windows have architraves, tower has 2-light windows with
round heads to lights, moulded stone arches and sills.
Hipped roofs, that to tower with finial. Campbell Street
facade of 3 bays, end bays project. Inserted windows with
wedge lintels to either side of central 1st floor window. 4
stacks with stone caps and later ventilation tower to rear
with 2-light openings and machicolated cap. This forms a
ventilating shaft for the original cells on the ground
floor, which are windowless and reached through an iron
door. Closely surrounding the building on both street
fronts is a wall of brick about 12 feet tall with rounded
stone coping. Bevelled corner is surmounted by a foliated
iron lampholder, with anthemion motif,above a plain doorway.
