52/214 Nos 3 and 5


Office Building. 1889. Grayson and Ould. Stone and brick
with granite to ground floor; slate roof. 5 storeys and
attics; 5 bays. Modern shop fronts and entrance with
segmental pediment. 1st floor of stone, with 5 segmental
arched window divided by fluted half-columns with Composite
capitals and with carved spandrels (the centre bay is
narrower). 2nd floor and above is all brick with terracotta
dressings. Mosaic frieze over 1st floor, with sailing ships
and inscription "British & Foreign Marine Insurance Company
Ltd". 2nd and 3rd floors with a 2-storeyed oriel at each
end, and 5 windows on each floor between (the 2nd floor ones
have enriched lintels, the 3rd floor pointed-arched, of 3
orders). Balustraded balcony over 3rd floor, cross windows
with Corinthian pilasters and enriched frieze above.
Dormers with tiered gables crowned by segmental pediments.
Spike finials to outer-bay pyramidal roofs.
