Department store. 1865-7. Stone with slate roof. 4
storeys with attic, 13 bays, end bays break forward. Ground
floor now has modern shop fronts (Marks & Spencer etc); 3
upper storeys. The centre is emphasised by a large round
headed window with brocken pediment at 1st floor over with
ornamental brackets, and cartouche flanked by flags over
window. End bays break forward with rusticated quoins.
Corners are canted with octagonal turrets, Palladian type
window with mask keystone supporting arms U.S.A. to left,
Britain to right. 2nd floor windows have panelled pilasters
and entablatures, 4th and 10th bays with pediments. Centre
bay has tripartite window with elaborately decorated pediment
and Manchester arms. End bays have tripartite windows,
centre light with aedicule and balustraded balcony. 3rd
floor windows have shouldered architraves, central window of
2 lights with rich balcony and cornice with attic
windows. End pavilions have Ionic colonnades between
rusticated antae. Central Palladian window and flanking
straight headed windows. Central bays have panelled finials
with pedimented caps. Central rectangular panel with
Liverpool arms over. Mansard roof has bull's eye dormers.
Truncated stacks and iron cresting. 7 bay returns have some
detail as main facade.
