1916. Church by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. Grey brick with
red tile roof. Grey brick with stone banding and window
heads, tile roof, single vessel nave and chancel, passage
aisles, 3 transepts and central tower. Weathered parapet.
West end has 3 cusped lancets in round-headed recess, with
ribs between (ritual west is actual north). Flanking
porches have pointed entrances with wood and iron gates.
North west porch bounded (1984). South-west porch has inner
entrance with pointed arch and tympanum with arms.
Transepts have half-hipped gables and windows as west front.
Chanced has blank east hall and 4-light windows to north and
south. Aisles have rose windows, those to south over doors.
Tower has 2 round headed recesses to each side, with round-
headed 2-light bell openings, Y-tracery and deep louvres.
South east angle chamfered, with pinnacle and canted stair
turret with hipped roof behind parapet; pyramidal roof.
Interior is rendered with exposed brick quoins. Passages
have arches to transepts and nave. Groin vaults to
crossings have brick ribs to 4 sides. Low chancel wall has
canted pulpits to each end. Organ loft to north of chancel.
Churchyard wall adjoins west end of church on both sides and
runs along Derby Lane, Etruscan Road and south side of site.
Main gate to Derby Lane has segmental arch; other gates to
side of west end and Etruscan Road. One of Sir Giles
Scott's most outstanding works, the church bears resemblance
to his prize winning design for the Anglican Cathedral,
Liverpool.
