- Station


Fire station and offices. 1897. T. Shelmerdine. Red brick
with stone dressings, slate roof. A symmetrical composition
in an Arts and Crafts Jacobean style. 3 storeys with attic,
tower to rear of end bay, 18 bays. Stone facing to most of
ground floor and stone panels to other floors. All windows
have mullions and transoms. Cornice runs along entire
length of the building. 1st floor windows have open
pediments, 3 flat-topped dormers, 7th bay has entrance and
1st floor oriel the base of which is carved with strapwork
and Liver bird. Pedimented dormer. 9th bay has blocked
entrance with decorated panel over. Decorated panel over
1st floor window has date. 10th-12th bays have entrance cut
into centre window. 1st floor balustraded balcony with left
hand canted bay. Pedimented dormer over all bays with 5-
light window, coping and cupola finial. 13th bay has cart
entrance with modern infill, 14th-16th bays have garage
doors between granite piers. 1st floor canted oriels
between banded piers. 3 pedimented dormers as 7th bay.
17th bay has stair windows in stone panels. 18th bay has
entrance cutting into window and 2-storey stone oriel over.
End 2 bays have pedimented gable. 10 cross-axial brick
stacks with raised brick bording. Tower of 3 stages: 1st
stage has 3 rectangular windows, 2nd stage has 3 segmental-
headed window with splayed reveals, 3rd stage has segmental-
headed opening with curved balcony on bracket and iron
railings. All 4 sides the same pyramidal roof with button
finial and flanking stacks. Utilitarian range to rear with
banded brick and mansard roof.
