20.12.65 The Causeway
War memorial. 1919-21. By Sir W. Goscombe John. Granite
with bronze sculpture. Steps to north, south, east and
west, up to circular walling. Octagonal base with tall
cross. Walls have terminals flanking steps with reliefs of
children. 4 round-headed panels have sculptures of armed
forces; ambulance men with wounded soldiers, gunners,
sailers on deck, and anti-aircraft gunners. Coping with
inscription. Inner benches. Base has inscriptions of
names. Figures encircle base of cross; Woman with children
and baggage, 2 soldiers, wounded soldier with reaching
woman. Celtic cross with chamfered shaft; central octagon
surrounded by rays. The theme, the defence of the home, is
rare in war memorials.
