16/262 Thornton House
House, now 5 houses. 1895, by Grayson and Ould. Extensions
to north of 1906 by J. Lomax Simpson. For James Darcy
Lever. Stone with timber-framed 1st floor, stone slate
roof. 2 storeys, garden front of 7 bays; end bays project
under jettied gables with canted ground floors, 3rd and 5th
bays, similar but smaller windows have leaded glazing.
Ground floor has double-chamfered-mullioned windows, the
lights with cusped round heads; 6th bay has segmental-headed
recess with bench. 1st floor has transomed windows; end
bays have 6-light canted oriels;3rd and 5th bays have 5-
light oriels with coved bases; balcony to 2nd bay. Entrance
to 5th bay. 4 cross-axial stacks with diagonal shafts.
Entrance front has service wing to right; 6 bays, the 1st 4
bays are stone, with drip moulds and coped parapet with
finials. 1st bay projects under gable, 3rd bay has 2-storey
canted bay window, 4th bay projects with return porch, 5th
bay is timber-framed with jettied 1st floor and coved
jettied gable, 6th bay projects under gable. 5th entrance
bay based on Davey Lever hall, Lancs. Ground floor canted
bay window and 4-light 1st floor windows, that to left is
stair window, large, with 2 transoms and bowed upper lights,
that to right corresponds to upper lights of other. Round-
arched opening to recessed entrance, other entrances to 4th
and 6th bays. Stone bays of entrance facade and 7th bay of
garden front belong to 1906 extension. Interior retains
some original features, panelling, fireplaces etc.
