Grandstand. Date stone to pilaster strip reads: "WRG/
June 12th 1885". Brick, yellow to east facade, red to west
facade, and stone dressings. 2 storeys and roof terrace, 41
bays; ground floor projects with terrace over, roof terrace
on cast iron columns. 12-bay central section has 3-bay
bowed ends. Ground floor has rusticated pilaster strips,
frieze and cornice and round-headed windows and 2 entrances,
frieze and cornice. 1st floor has round-headed windows and
entrances, the terrace has balustrade and columns with
capitals based on those of the Tower of the Winds supporting
roof terrace, which has cast iron balustrade. 7 bays to
right similar but C20 a-lterations. Projecting 1st floor
balcony on cast iron columns to last 6 bays of central
section and 1st 4 bays to right. A further 16 bays to right
also with C20 alterations, red brick extension to ground
floor. 6 bays to left of central section similar, with some
alterations to ground floor. 6th bay has ground floor
passage. West facade has 3 crow-stepped gables and
rectangular pavilion at south end next to bowed bay; some
brick stacks. Building has historical associations with the
Grand National which started as the Grand Liverpool
Steeplechase in 1839. Racing dates from 1829.
