C1835 detached villa of coursed stucco with unusually complex and ornate
architectural dressing of Graeco-Egyptian derivation. One main storey with
a low attic storey above entablature 3 bays to each main elevation with Doric
wings to rear. The narrower entrance front facing corner of the triangular
plan grounds, has a tetrastyle Greek Doric portico of fluted coupled columns
with acanthus scroll to frieze and pediment. Doorcase with leaded ornament.
Tall thin arched side lights framed by incised Soanian scrolls with weather
over. Similar lights set immediately each side of portico. The main ground
floor windows have cambered incised arches springing from broad piers with
wreathed and panelled quoins. Coupled pilaster strips to corners carry deep
first floor entablature with wreaths and Greek keys. The other storey is
narrowly articulated by a whole series of coupled and single pilaster strips.
Small framed window over portico; the side windows have been lengthened and
cut up into eaves course; cornice and straight parapet. Low nipped elate
roof. The side elevations have similar but slightly simplified details.
Central French window to north-west garden front, 2 blind bays on first floor.
South-east front to Calthorpe Road has central blank window in "Egyptian"
eaved architrave on palmette brackets. Service range extending to north-west
with former integral coachhouse: some alterations of fenestration; pilaster
strips to both floors by side entrance. Interior largely modernised but
entrance hall has carved geometric staircase in open well; cast turned bannisters
with narrow scrolled lyre standards between continued across galleried landing
with continuous moulded handrail. Large garden with serpentine carriage sweep.
