Description

GROVE LANE
1.
5104
Handsworth B20
Church of St Peter
SP 08 NW 6/13 12.5.81
II
2.
C1905, unfurnished. J A Chatwin, one of his last churches. Red brick with stone
dressings; tiled roof. Massive square tower running apparently from north to south
rather than square, the grandeur accentuated by the abutting to it of the short
polygonal chancel. Two bays only. Chancel with 2 light windows plus a 3 light east
window. Dec to Perp in style. The tower with a clasping polygonal stair turret and
buttresses increasing the illusion of breadth by continuing north and south the east
and west wall plans. Clerestoryed nave with the 2 light windows set one pair per
bay. The transepts are west of the crossing tower and appear externally as 2 gabled
bays each with a 3 light window. The tower crenellated, the east and west walls
ramped to a finial cross.
