1898-1901, by T.W.F Newton and Cheattle, the decorative terracotta and green faience
by Doulton and Co and other detailing by W J Neatby. The gabled facade to Union
Street is of 3 storeys plus attic and set diagonally to the arcade with a big central
arch flanked by polygonal turrets terminating in little cupolas with windows and
scrolly buttresses. To the left, another single bay. Ground floor with modern
shop fronts. Fenestration by mullioned and transomed windows, those of the first
floor with 2 transoms, those of the second floor with one. Above the arch a row of
5 small windows, a splendid band of sculpture including caryatid figures and a
3-lFlight window in the gable. The arcade itself with, between lengths of coffered
ceiling at either end, the now all modern shop fronts, 7 a side, beneath excellent
scrolly green faience balustrade with intermittent cupolas. The facade to Union
Passage is ulilitarian.
