No 29 (Taylor's Music Shop)
Music shop. 1893. Sculptor J Lea. White Hollington and red Penkridge
sandstones. Three storeys with attic, three bays. Ground floor has mid-
C20 shop front, below cornice, flanked by pilasters with granite shafts.
The first floor also has pilasters between bays, of red sandstone carved
with musical instruments. The capitals are carved with the heads of
Handel, Bach, Mozart and Haydn. Between them each bay has a frieze carved
with a biblical scene: at the left the fall of Jerico, in the centre David
playing before Saul, at the right the Ark entering the Holy City. The
pilasters of the first floor are carved with foliage and have Corinthian
capitals. The entablature has a frieze carved with foliage and musical
instruments. Above is an elaborate parapet with a central attic window
projecting upwards within a round arch and under a cornice, with volutes
to each side. At the outer corners of the parapet are statues of Euterpe,
Goddess of Music, and of Melpomene, Goddess of Poetry.
