4/124 The Fountain Inn
Public House and No 52

Public house. Early C19. Brick, rendered at front and painted at rear,
with slate roof. Two storeys, two bays. Facade has boxed sashes with glazing
bars on first floor. On the ground floor is a timber public house front,
probably later C19, with pilasters and an entablature, and with a narrow window
at the right, possibly replacing a door. The doorway, with a mid-C20 surround,
is between the two main ground floor windows. The facade overlaps with No 52
to the right, which has a shop front on the ground floor and two boxed sashes
with glazing bars on the first floor. Chimneys on gables of Fountain Inn,
and to right of No 52, which has a lower roof line. At the rear are two wings,
with brick dentil eaves and with some sashed windows with glazing bars. From
1836 the Inn served as the headquarters of William Perry, the "Tipton Slasher",
boxing champion of England 1850-57. Internally the Fountain Inn extends above
part of No 52.
