Watertower. 1881. Red brick with polychrome blue and gault brick dressings
in Italian Gothic style. Rectangular plan. 3 stories with hipped roof. Entrance
front has battered plinth with blue brick string course. Central boarded double
doors in round arched opening with dentils and alternating blue and gault brick
voussoirs; pointed head to outer profile of arch. First floor with 2 angle
and 2 central pilasters with dentil capitals carrying 3 arches with alternating
blue and gault brick voussoirs; 3 cast iron casement windows with pointed heads
in segmental arched openings. Second floor with 2 string courses and 1 cast
iron casement window. Dentil cornice. Attic with 3 raised panels and machiciolated
string course above. Hipped asbestos roof with wooden and glazed louvre on
apex. North and south returns with 1 window to 1st and 2nd floor levels and
2 brick buttress with weathered offsets. One of two surviving town watertowers
of its style and date in Norfolk. Kelly's Directory Norfolk (1916) 110.
