Church of St John
10.5.61 The Baptist


Parish church. C14 W.tower, nave, chancel, south porch. Flint, with limestone
dressings and quoins. Copper-covered roof continuous over nave and chancel;
pantile roof on south porch. Angle-buttressed west tower with narrow bell-
openings. Small two-light west window. Oversailing tower parapet with cruci-
form corner pinnacles. Remains of C14 arcade to north aisle (now demolished)
blocked-in with brickwork. South porch with C19 sundial over entrance. Fine
C14 ironwork on knocker of south door. Two south windows with reticulated
tracery, one perpendicular window under a four-centred arch, the easternmost
south window with three blocked ogee-headed lights under a square hood mould
Octagonal seven-sacrament font on stepped podium against north wall with traces
of original colour. Rood loft stairs in south wall marking division between
nave and chancel (no chancel arch).
