Former house and brewery buildings, now a hotel. Early C17 core, to south west,
re-built and extended in early C18, forming 'L'-shaped plan of 2 storeys and
attics. C19 wing, set back on west, of 'T'-shaped plan attached to front range.
Substantial extension, circa 1900 behind front range forming double pile, the west
range, re-fronted to the east at the same time. Modern extensions on east and west,
linking converted maltings forming an open courtyard to the north, all of 2 storeys.
Built of red brick with pantiled roofs. South facade of 7 bays. Plinth, moulded
string course, modillion cornice and brick parapet. Sash windows with glazing bars
and flat gauged brick arches. Central porch, flanked by brick pilasters, with above
a sundial. Porch with richly carved segmental pedimented canopy dated (17)28, with
fruit and foliage, supported on Corinthian columns with base and capitals. Shouldered
architrave to 6 panel door. Parapet gable to west, stepped at the rear with external
end stack. The C20 facade to the east of 3 bays matches that to the west, but with
eastern 6 panel door with fanlight under segmental brick arch. 2 segmental head dormer
windows in roof with casement windows. Western gable and north wing with stepped gable
rough cast, with flint plinth, and string courses at first and attic floor level.
Ground floor sash window and casement window above with C18 plan. South facade of set
back west wing, 3 asymmetric bays, with panelled doors and sash windows with glazing
bars and flat gauged brick arches. Rear east-west wing, circa 1900, 6 bays, with
first floor string course, sash windows with glazing bars and flat gauged brick arches
with key blocks. To the west a stone doorcase with segmental pediment. Timber dentil
eaves and plain tile hipped roof. North wing to west, east facade circa 1900, 5 bays
of sash windows with glazing bars, flat gauged brick arches with key blocks. Brick
modillion cornice and balustrade. End stack to north parapet gable. Thin wing linked
to converted and extended mattings by modern addition. Little remains of the original )
interiors. Brick open fire place with timber breesumer and oak chamfered beams in north
wing. Facing entrance door, a fine early C18 well stair with moulded handrail, twisted
balusters, paired at newels, with carved tread ends and strings. Some late C17 oak
panelling. Attached at the west, brick piers and C19 wrought iron gate. Attached to
the south, wrought iron railings with finials and gate, on dwarf brick wall. Modern
buildings and maltings not of special interest.
