TM 09 SW OLD BUCKENHAM FEN LANE

3/112 Fen Farmhouse

Farmhouse. c.1500. Timber framed with rendered wattle and daub infill and
thatched roof. Open hall plan, floored in C17. 2 storeys and attic. Long
brick and pantiled outshut C19. One 2-light timber mullioned window to first
floor, the mullions plain chamfered. 3 other late C20 plastic casements.
Gabled roof with ridge stack left of centre. West gable wall bricked to first
floor, drip shelf and 2 late C20 casements as before. Rear elevation obscured
by C20 glazed and pantiled outshut below 4 C20 plastic casements in original
openings. Main room with chamfered bridging beam with tongue stops of C17
and similar joists. Open Flemish bond brick fireplace with bressummer. Winder
staircase by stack. Heavy scantling studwork and middle rail. 4-centred
timber door in first floor east room and tension bracing to corners. Arched
braces to tie beam. Queen struts (replaced) to roof, collars, clasped purlins,
ridge piece and wind bracing. Ground floor east room has late C20 close
studding but sole plate and middle rail mortices indicate original identical
disposition.
