7/44 Church Farmhouse


Former farmhouse. C17 with important C18 additions. Rendered timberframe
faced in brick to front. Thatched roof. Originally of Lobby-entrance type
plan. 2 storeys with attic. Late C18 facade of 5 bays of sash windows with
glazing bars beneath skewback arches. Central raised and fielded panelled
door, partly glazed and with a very simple doorcase. Central axial stack
of 4 interconnecting angled shafts with moulded brick decoration at inter-
stices. Southernmost bay and gable-end probably early C18 with English bond
brickwork, tumbling-in and plain platband. Later lean-tos to rear and 3
dormers with modern fenestration. Early C18 sash window to kitchen with wide
glazing bars. Original winding stair to rear side of stack. C18 barrel
vaulted passage through stack. Very fine early C18 half-turn well stair with
corner landings in southernmost bay. Turned attenuated vase balusters, wide
handrail, shaped tread ends and panelled dado. Several raised and fielded
panelled doors and an early C18 bolection moulded fireplace. Ogee and stepped
chamfer stops to original timbers. Group value with Park farmhouse 7/49.
