House. Early to mid C18 with important late C18 and C20 refurbishment and addition.
Brick with black pantile and copper roofs. Original block square double pile. Later lower service wing from middle of north facade westwards. C20 single storeyed extensions to west and east facades. Full-height 2-bay northward. extension of east facade executed in 1956. 2 storeys with attic and cellar.
South facade of 5 bays of sash windows with glazing bars beneath skewback arches with raised keystones. Wider spacing to 3 centre bays which are surmounted by a pediment supported on a pair of giant pilasters. Central doorcase probably late C18 with a swept stair of 6 treads in stone. Semi-circular fanlight with radiating glazing bars penetrating a pediment supported on engaged Tuscan columns. Stone platband. Central first floor window with jalousie shutters. Semicircular headed window in tympanum. Second pair of giant pilasters to outside angles of facade. Bold painted moulded brick cornice. West facade with similar cornice. 2 pedimented dormer windows and one flat-roofed dormer, the 3 with modillion cornices. Half external stack, original lead downpipes and modern single storeyed extension.
East facade. Projecting 3 bay single storey extension of 2 C20 phases. Fine re-used doorcase of circa 1800 with 3-centred fanlight penetrating a pediment supported on Ionic columns. Decorative glazing bars to fanlight, miniature modillion cornices and dentils to pediment and strapwork designs to soffits. 2 north bays of 1956 in close imitation of original. Moulded brick cornice and 3 pedimented dormers with modillions. 2 half external stacks, one of 1956.
Interior. Late C18 staircase with stick balusters, open string and swept mahogany handrail.
Historical Association. Childhood home of Sir Rider Haggard.
