9/17 The Grange

Former rectory. Mainly late C18 with service wing retaining some evidence
of an earlier structure. Gault brick with some red brick to service wing.
Slate roofs. Irregular H plan with principal rooms to south block. 2 storeys
with a 2½ storey service wing. South facade of 5 bays of sash windows with
glazing bars beneath skewback arches. Centre bay with margin glazed French
windows. First floor windows with shaped blind boxes. Moulded wooden cornice
with a classical dentil course. Hipped roof. East (entrance) facade recessed
between north and south blocks. 3 bays of sash windows with glazing bars
beneath skewback arches. C19 gabled porch in Gothic style with a 4-centred
entrance arch and a parapet gable with moulded brick coping. West facade has
a first floor early C19 balcony with wrought iron railings and margin glazed
French windows. Irregular north facade with 2 sash windows with wide glazing
bars to ground floor, 3 other sash windows and a 2-light casement window to
top floor. Interior. Fine quarter-turn staircase with landing, probably mid
C18. Open string with shaped tread ends and 3 turned balusters per tread with
square knops. Wide handrail with open wreath onto a channelled newel. Simple
dado with channelled pilasters and handrail.
