Chesterfield Villas

Terrace of four villas in cottage orne style. Date c1879.
Architect probably David Brandon. Flint with ashlar
dressings. Brick chimney stacks. Plain tiled roofs and
central first floor section of close studded half timber.
Terrace plan form with gabled cross wings at the ends, the
left hand being paired. Simple casement lights under Gothic
arched openings with brick herringbone spandrels. The inner
left hand gable has a circular attic oculus and massive
twin ashlar kneelers below the gable bargeboard as does the
right hand gable. The close studded section carries twin
half dormers on brackets with shaped bargeboards and open
work timber finials. Three large composite chimney stacks
with one smaller stack to the west. Two of the large stacks
have four Tudor chimneys each of shaped bricks linked at
their heads with terracotta crockets.
History: built by John and Margaret Bond Cabbell following
additions to Cromer Hall. The lodge and cottages were named
after John Bond Cabbell's London home, 1 Chesterfield
Gardens. The front gardens of Chesterfield Villas are
walled in the same fashion as Chesterfield Lodge.
