Gaol built in 1787 on site of the Old Leprosy Hospital, enlarged 1822 and became County House of Correction. Said to have had 53 cells, several day rooms, exercising yards and infirmary and four tread mills for grinding corn. 1822 mill on west side: red brick; hipped black-glazed pantile roof; brick dentil eaves; three storeys and basement; five window bays, small windows with rubbed brick arches and stone cills; wide central ground floor entrance with slight rubbed brick arch, another doorway on right. East wing (containing cells): lower; red brick; brick dentil eaves; pantile roof with hipped end; studded prison door with barred viewing hole.
