30.11.51. The Priory (or Abbey)
Gatehouse (formerly listed
as The Abbey, including all
remains of Augustinian Priory).
Wall adjoining Priory Gatehouse
to south, fronting High Street

C15 gatehouse at west end of the Priory Church, on High Street frontage. Flint,
rubble, with stone dressings. Large moulded 4-centred archway with 2 tall niches
above with 3 panels between containing shields. Inside arch is another smaller
4-centred arch with large oak doors. Originally vaulted. New concrete floor
with room above containing original fireplace and mullion/transom window with
flanking niches.
High flint wall adjoining south facing High Street: brick and flint at lower
levels. Later C19 battlements with bracketed cornice.
