2.
Scheduled Ancient Monument. Remains of Augustinian Priory. Founded circa 1150.
Became an important pilgrimage centre. All that remains of the church is the
C15 gabled east wall with a very large window, the tracery missing, and 2 octagonal
turrets with buttresses with flushwork and niches. Late C13 remains of refectory
with south and west walls only, the west wall having large 4-light traceried
window. East of the refectory is the early C14 dormitory undercroft: 2 aisles
of 3 bays, rib vaulted, on octagonal piers and semi-circular wall shafts. The
rest of the Priory remains is incorporated into the Abbey house. Including Norman
doorway east of the Priory church re-erected and imported from elsewhere, these
are the only pre-C13 remains.
