Dovecote. Mid-C18 restored 1937 by R.W. Ketton-Cremer. Brick. Shingle
roof. Octagonal plan. Doorway in south face with flat rubbed brick arch;
door of 8 panels. Panel recording restoration over. Adjoining faces each
have a Diocletian window, that to the left with entry for birds in centre
light. Moulded brick eaves cornice. Wooden octogonal turret with louvres
to each face with a glazed semicircular head; timber cornice; lead bell-shaped
dome with weather vane. Interior approximately 2000 nest holes in rows, with
brick bands between the rows. The dovecote is in the centre of the north
wall of the kitchen garden. The walls approximately 5 metres high C18 brick
with quadrant brick coping. Square on plan, the east and west walls
continuing south for approximately 30 metres. Large gateway in west corner
of south wall, the gatepiers topped by stone pineapples. Central C17 doorway
in south wall formerly to house removed to garden in 1842 by W.H. Windham.
Spine wall with central gateway with semicircular gault brick arch dated
1833; glasshouses to south with vents to north. Stone pineapple to west end.
