9/60 The Triumphal Arch

G.V. I
Gatehouse, completed C176O. Built by Matthew Brettingham to a design attributed
to William Kent. Gault brick with flint rustication and stone dressings. Slated
and lead-covered roofs. Tripartite facade of one wide and two narrow arched
openings surmounted by plain pediments. Groined brick vaults under arches.
String course at impost level of main arch. Shaped buttresses on E and W sides
of centre block. Dentilled cornice. Tripartite lunette windows under central
pediment. Ball finials on side wing pediments.
