5/61 The Great Barn


Five-stead threshing barn. C1790 by Samuel Wyatt, in austere neo-classical style.
Gault brick with slate roofs. Brick dentil eaves course and pedimented gables.
Four pedimented porches projecting on E and W sides expressing the two threshing
floors. Large segmental-headed door openings with plain brick bands at impost
level. One storey lean-to workshops and stores around perimeter of barn with
hipped roofs. High-level lunettes, some with honeycomb brick vents. Circular
brick ventilation openings in gable pediments of main roof.
