Cottage. Probably C17 with C18 addition to E. Flint and brick, with brick
dressings. The C18 rang. to E has brick dentil eaves, one storey and attic,
ground floor 2 C19 sashes and 2 small windows and blocked door. Two C19 gabled
attic dormers aria small window inserted. Pantile roofs with coped gable ends.
To the W and slightly set back, the circa C17 part contains a form of cruck truss,
possible re-used, with ogee shaped blades of light scantling (only 4 inches)
rising to a yoke into which the blades are pegged. The base of the blades rests on
a beam and it is probably either a full cruck or raised crucks cut short and not
an upper cruck. The rest of the roof members are relatively modern. It has been
floored with a spine beam and 2 cross beams with chamfers and stops. The
arrangement of beams at the W end suggests a fire hood which is most unusual for
Norfolk.
The II* grading of this building is because of the oraok truss. Whether it is
re-used or altered from its original form, no other cruck trusses have yet been
found in Norfolk. Ref: RCHM.
There is said to be documentary evidence showing Stiffkey Moot Hall on the site
in the late C16.
