16/140 Church of St Mary

6.3.59 I

Parish church. Flint, stone dressings, slated roof. W tower, S porch, nave and
clerestory, chancel; brick N chancel chapel. Blocker Norman N doorway, tower
decorated. Perpendicular bell openings and battlements, but blocked C12 openings.
Nave and chancel C14. Priest's door set into chancel S buttress as a gabled porch.
Windows: nave S two 3-light Perpendicular, nave N one 3-light Perpendicular,
chancel S one 2-light 'Y' tracery, one 3-light Perpendicular, E window 3-light
Perpendicular bay nave 2 bay chancel. Nave roof eliptical plaster ceiling with 3
roundels and moulded cornice, late C18. Box pews and wall panelling, C18.
Three decker pulpit, sounding board. Chancel, closely set late C18 altar rails.
Much re-set glass throughout, C15 English in nave, German and Flemish Renaissance
elsewhere. C18 font, simple stem, diminutive bowl. N chancel chapel: Turner
mausoleum, brick, 'Y' tracery windows; C18 double doors with iron grills from
chancel, black ledger slabs to floor, hatchments.
