House. Mid C17, with earlier C16 wing. Brick, earlier build in flint with
re-used stone quoins. Black pantile roof. Earlier house (No 28) incorporated
in mid C17 'U' plan house now divided into 3 cottages of 2 storeys and attics.
E front: central block (No 40) with flanking wings (No 38 to N, No 42 to S).
Brick plinths, plat-band string course at first floor and attics, gables with
kneelers and tumbling. No 38 with purlin irons with CT initials (Sir Charles
Turner, Bt, Lord of Manor, obit 1780). No 42 with central brick finial to apex.
E gable of No 38: blank ground floor, first floor filled in window embrasure,
to attic 2-light casement with C19 cast iron glazing bars. E gable of No 42:
ground floor C20 window, first floor C19 2-light casement, glazing bars, the
whole breaking through the attic plat-band. E front of No 40: ground floor
two 3-light casements with cast iron glazing bars under rubbed brick cambered
arches with 2 identical casements at first floor under wooden lintels. At left
C18 door of 8 raised and fielded panels, the lower 4 arranged as a St Andrew's
cross. N return of S wing (No 42) has C18 door with 6 raised and fielded panels
with re-used C17 door jambs. Rear facade: central 2 storey stairs tower with
kneelers and tumbling to gable. The Interior of No 38 has C16 or early C17 evidence:
2 four centred stone fire surrounds with chamfered reveals and stops at first floor
and attic. Ground floor with crudely chamfered principal beams. No 40 has C17
principal beams with stops to ground floor, and C17 and C18 doors and panelling.
C17 roof structure with butt purlins, collars and wind bracing shared by all
3 cottages, but to No 38 raised above the earlier roof line.
