Description

TG 42 NW SEA PALLING WAXHAM

3/53 Subsidary Garden Wall
16.4.55 to Waxham Hall

G.V. II

Garden wall. Circa 1570, C19 and late C20. Whole flints and brick and some
ashlar. Wall runs south-west from house and returns north-west, interrupted
by gate. Wall between gate and house rebuilt late C20 following collapse.
Remainder of wall with rounded ashlar coping. In angle of return are high
relief carvings of cement applied over brick and flint rubble of the mid C19.
Stylised foliage and rocks. Standing or sitting on rocks are grotesque
figures playing musical instruments including tambourine and horn. The whole
appears to be a rustic version of Aztec style carvings then being published
in engraved form. To north a further scene in same style depicting 3 Indians
(with North American headresses but with Mexican Indian features)
gesticulating in a stylised forest. Central Indian aims bow and arrow at
coiled hissing serpent. To left and right of each scene are 2 grotesque head
corbels (6 in all).
