Barn. Circa 1570. Flint with brick dressings and some re-used ashlar.
Thatched roof. At corners diagonal stepped buttresses, probably re-used
ecclesiastical work. North and south sides originally with 2 stepped flint
and ashlar buttresses. North side pierced by 3 timber double doors under
segmental arches, distributed symmetrically. One C16 buttress survives left
of centre. 6 additional C18 sloping brick buttresses. 8 loop ventilation
lights with brick surrounds remain, others blocked or eradicated. Over whole
elevation is brick diaper patterning. South side with 3 opposing double doors
raised to full height with ashlar quoins. 13 loop ventilation lights remain
as before, some in fragmentary condition. Many brick repairs, especially
towards east. Later outbuildings obscure details. West gable end with brick
diapering, becoming broken and fragmentary in gable head. 5 loop ventilation
lights within brick surrounds, some now blocked. 4 further ventilation lights
in gable head. East gable end also with 5 loop ventilation lights as before
and remains of one in gable head. Brick diapering survives to gable head
only. Interior. Ventilation lights splayed in interior. 19 bay roof of
alternately hammerbeam and queen strut trusses, the hammerbeams being sawn-
off ties. Most of hammerposts missing or temporarily replaced. Hammerbeams
and ties with arched braces dropping to wall posts. Queen struts from tie
beams to principal rafters. 3 tiers butt purlins. Collars are carried on
arched braces. Curved windbracing below top tier of purlins. Interior
partitioned by brick wall towards west end.
