8/42 Remains of St. Benet's

G.V. II*

Remains of Benedictine Abbey. Founded 1020, fell into disrepair 1545. Date
of remains probably C14. Flint with ashlar dressings. Positions of west
tower, nave, transept, aisled chancel and chapter house identifiable from
surviving fragments. Side buttresses and plinth courses with knapped
flushwork. Scheduled Ancient Monument, County number 6.
