House, early C18 on late C16 core. Brick, black glazed pantiles to shallow
pitched hipped roof. Double depth, 3 bays 2 storeys. Main facade to west:
symmetrical brick plinth, rusticated quoins and window surrounds, platbands
above and below 1st floor windows; lower 2-storey projecting porch under
hipped roof, rusticated quoins; opening flanked by stone square fluted
columns having Corinthian capitals, chevrons of sprays of flowers and buds
within the flutes on all 3 sides, plain entablature of wood, above a stone
achievement of Newman between two large outward facing lionesses couchant;
flush sashes with glazing bars and moulded frames under flat skew back
arches, 2 each to ground and 1st floor, one to first floor of porch; half-
width blank windows to ground floor and half-width windows to 1st floor
flanking porch. Drainhead inscribed HG/1(7)24 at left angle of porch with
front facade. South front: 3 bays not symmetrical, hipped roof, rusticated
quoins; windows and surrounds to bays 1 and 3 as west facade; platband
widening beneath windows; narrow sash with glazing bars to centre bay first
floor. Stone doorway to central bay, door with 3 glazed upper lights, axial
stack above doorway. Rear: coursed flint and brick mosaic with brick
dressings and eaves courses; bays 1 and 3 project forward, hipped roof to
each bay; bay 1 slightly stepped below platband, flush sashes with glazing
bars, 2 to ground floor, one reduced in height to 1st floor; centre bay
for staircase, scattered fenestration of 2 cross windows with leaded panes
and original fittings, two 2-light casements below with pintle hinges under
segmental arches. North front: facade encases and replaces earlier single
range of 2 storeys and attic; ? lobby entrance, 3 bays, 2 storeys to right,
3 storeys to left. Rusticated quoins and some window surrounds, platband,
off-centre door to right having 8 raised and fielded panels, pedimented
canopy; axial stack above doorway; narrow flush sash with glazing bars and
moulded case above, flush sashes with glazing bars and moulded cases to ground
and first floor of right bay, surround to that of ground floor breaking
forward. Left hand bay with rusticated surrounds to former openings on 1st
floor; scattered fenestration of casements, some renewed. Interior: large
enclosed stacks behind doors to north and south fronts; painted C18 panelling
to hall; openwell broad open string staircase to rear of centre bay, twisted
balusters, carved frieze to handrail, brackets to treads and wide string
below carved, panelled dado. Oak panelling to rear room of 3rd bay ground
floor. Raised and fielded panelling to landing and to porch room; ogee
stopped chamfered beam to 1st floor centre bay front room; twisted balusters
to stair in 1st bay to 2nd floor and roof spaces. 2nd floor with timber
studded partitions King post roof of separate construction above large close
ceiling joists and ties of earlier range at north-west corner. Single storey
additional range to north-east of no special interest.
