Description

LANGLEY WITH HARDLEY STONE LANE
TG 30 SE
3/56 Barn approx l00m north
east of the Grange

GV II

Barn, now agricultural store. C16 in origin with later remodelling. Red
brick walls and east gable; half-hipped thatched roof. C20 square-headed
double sliding doors in north and south walls; large C20 door opening in
east gable. Interior: five structural bays of aisle posts with jowled tops
supporting arch-braced tie beams and longitudinal aisle plates. Reverse
arch braces between aisle posts and plate. Short outshut-ties with straight
braces to posts, probably the remains of passing braces from the earlier
external walls. Some aisle posts still stand on sole plates, now embedded
in concrete floor. Clasped purlin roof with reverse-arch braces to principal
rafters. The roof framing indicates that the barn originally continued
further to the east.
