Gate lodge c1785 by Sir John Soane. Gault brick with Portland stone
dressings. Slate roof with pedimented gables. One storey, square on plan.
Gable walls to north and south have a pair of recessed Tuscan columns
supporting a metope frieze and gable pediment. Central window opening
between columns containing semi-circular headed sash with glazing bars under
a rubbed brick arch. Cornice overhang with guttae continues along east
and west walls. In the west wall facing the driveway, a semi-circular headed
doorway with a rubbed brick arch of two orders; spandrel with beaded panels,
door with four flush panels. Blind semi-circular headed recess centrally
placed in east wall. Central chimney stack on ridge line with dog tooth
ornament to cap. Fireplace on east wall with cast iron hob grate and simple
wooden surround and mantle shelf, probably original. Railings screen at
south west corner on low brick plinth; diagonally-set square section wrought
iron railings with necked and tapered finials. Square cage gate piers
incorporating elongated cast iron medallions and capped with a pair of cast
roundels on scrolled bases. Two swept stay-bars on north side of pier.
