Country House. Late C16, remodelled in early C18. Red brick; steeply-
pitched plaintiled roofs. Two storeys and attics, E-plan with later
additions. Main facade to the east of nine bays, arranged 2:5:2, the outer
bays being 2 1/2 storey crosswings with stepped gables and C18 angle-pilasters.
Sashes with glazing bars and architraves, gauged brick arches over openings.
Central doorway with segmental pediment on pulvinated frieze and Ionic
pilasters. Modillion eaves cornice. Three pedimented dormers with sashes.
Large external stacks to north and south: southern stack has large square
sundial and coat of arms below six octagonal shafts with moulded bases and
rebuilt linked caps. Two octagonal shafts to north stack. Square, panelled
ridge stack off-centre to north. Openings in north wall of crosswing much
altered. 2 1/2 storey range running north and west: stepped north gable with
internal stack and two square attic windows, two blocked first floor openings
with flat moulded brick hoods. Western range slightly lower, with ovolo-
moulded casements and stepped gable with moulded brick eaves corbels.
Hexagonal lead-covered lantern astride ridge at east end; two 2-light attic
dormers with hipped roofs. Large chimney stack off-centre to west, astride
ridge line with four octagonal shafts with moulded caps and bases. On the
west wall, a C18 stair projection with stepped gable and fine Venetian window
with Tuscan columns. Interior: good early C18 interiors: main hall has
bolection-moulded fireplace with overmantle containing painting of the house
by Bardwell, 1735. Three good C16 fireplaces, two on the ground floor
restored C20. Fine staircase of c.1740 with three turned balusters per tread
and carved tread-ends. Raised and fielded dado panelling to staircase walls.
