TM 29 NE HOWE THE GREEN
2/24 Church of St.Mary
Parish church. Medieval. Flint, with some Roman tiles and ironbound
conglomerate, stone and brick dressings. Tile roof. Cll west tower and
nave, C19 south porch, early C14 chancel. Round tower with blocked doorway
to west; deep splay to round windows on north, south and west faces; over
these a deep splay to small round-headed windows on south and west. Brick
parapet; conical cap. Nave of 2 bays; south west quoins include some Roman
tiles. To south, one restored window with 2 ogee lights, one C19 similar
doorway with continuous chamfer moulding; round-headed window in deep splay;
2 restored Y-tracery windows. Buttressed chancel of 2 bays. To south,
2 restored windows of 2 cusped lights each with a quatrefoil in the head.
One lancet window to north. C19 3-light east window. C19 south porch.
Nave doorway with imposts; pointed arch probably later. Interior. Imposts
to blocked west door. Moulded imposts to tower arch. Rood stair in south
nave wall. Y-tracery windows set in blank arches. Arch-braced roof; wooden
corbels with angels holding shields; roll moulding to corbels; rest of
restoration of 1895. Chancel arch painted, possibly all C19. Cusped
piscina with square hood mould. Some re-used bench ends in chancel. C19
