Country house, built 1852-4 for Humphrey Stracey. Red brick, rendered and
ashlared. Ground floor ashlared and vermiculated. Roofs slated (roof of
main block not visible behind parapet). Three storeys and cellar. 9 x 6
bays : Western facade of nine bays, centre bay advanced with giant Ionic corner
pilasters. Central portico with Tuscan columns and frieze; balustrade at
first floor level. Sash windows with glazing bars. First and second floor
windows have rendered surrounds; first floor windows have flat canopies on
console brackets. Plat band at first floor cill level. Massive corner
pilasters with giant Ionic columns. Moulded cornice with rope-work frieze.
Parapet panelled and pierced, with stone balusters. Stone urns at parapet
corners. North front of six bays with central three bay Tuscan porte-cochere.
Off-centre entrance with bolection moulded architrave and cornice, ornate
rectangular fanlight and C20 door. Massive full-height pilaster on left-hand
side of door. Detailing and surface treatment all as west facade. Symmetrical
south facade of nine bays with central three-bay bow, segmental in plan.
Giant Ionic pilasters on rusticated and vermiculated ground floor. Sash windows
extending to ground level in outer bays; centre three sashes without glazing
bars. Tall first floor sashes with glazing bars and elaborately-moulded
architraves, apron panels and pediments on console brackets. Parapet with
some urns surviving. To the east a lower service wing and conservatory with
some C20 fenestration.
