4/14 The Tower House

Estate house, formerly a grandstand for the park racecourse. Built c.1770
to a design attributed to Thomas and William Ivory of Norwich, converted to
dwelling in C19. Red brick with diaper work. Roofs concealed behind
parapets. Circular tower of seven storeys with attached 2-storey and single
storey wings. Stair tower to south of seven storeys in header-bond brickwork
with traces of diapering; small loop windows on south side with stone
lintols. Rebuilt castellated parapet. Square 2-storey and basement block
attached on north side in English bond brickwork; platband at first floor
level continues around tower. In the east wall, a 3-light ogee-headed ground
floor casement with intersecting tracery and leaded glazing; first floor sash
with glazing bars and segmental head. Moulded brick cornice below castellated
parapet. In the north wall are three ogee-headed recesses with splayed
reveals, the centre one containing a 3-light window matching that on the east
side. Above, two narrower ogee-headed niches flanking a square-headed sash
with margin-panes. To the west a lower, later 2-storey block wrapping around
the south-west corner: 2 and 3-light casements with leaded glazing and
segmental heads. Small single-storey block in north-west angle. Ref:
