3/39 The Grange


House. Probably C17 in origin, but fabric now mainly C18 and C19. Red brick,
steeply-pitched roof of corrugated clay tiles. Two storeys and attics, double-
pile plan. South facade of two builds, the eastern range of three bays and
2½ storeys. Three shaped attic gables with brick copings. Ovolo-moulded
casements with transoms, 3-light on ground and first floor, 2-light in attics.
Windows set in stuccoed chamfered surrounds. Centre entrance bay with
stuccoed embellishment: pilastered door surround with keyed semicircular arch,
2-leaf half-glazed door; first floor window set in pedimented surround with
large side-scrolls and pulvinated frieze. Moulded string course below first
floor windows. Brick-dentil eaves. Ridge chimney stack off-centre to east
of entrance. West range has slightly higher eaves line; diaper-patterning
in brickwork at change of builds. Central 2-storey projection with Dutch
gable and pedimented windows. Double crow-stepped west gables, that to the
south-west probably C17. Two first floor cross-casements with pedimented
surrounds, ground floor bay window with hipped plain tiled roof. Three
chimney stacks in valley between piles with dentilled and moulded caps. C19
gabled 2-storey range to north; stair turret with stepped gable in north
east angle. Interior: has C18 staircase with twisted balusters.
