5.6.72 Lakenham First School.
(Formerly Infants' School)

Hospital and School for Girls, now school. 1863 on tablet. Yellow brick;
hipped slate roof; 2 storeys; 11 first-floor windows, symmetrical. Double-leaf
panelled door in slightly projecting centre bay has fanlight with glazing bars
in recessed round-headed moulded and gauged brick arch. Round-headed ground-floor
windows have glazing bars (one missing) under gauged brick arches linked by a
moulded string course. Projecting hipped gable-fronted end wings. First floor
windows have sashes with glazing bars under flat gauged brick arches. Plain sill
band. Overhanging eaves with paired brackets. Cast iron lion masks on gutters.
3-bay wing in similar style set back to right. Tablets flanking the main door
record the history of the foundation.
