26.2.54. CHURCH OF ST ETHELDREDA
- I
Former parish church now redundant and used as studio. C12, C14 and C19
restorations by E. Boardman. Flint with stone and brick dressings. Plain
tile roof. West tower nave and chancel. South porch. Truncated round
tower with octagonal top having brick quoins. 4 bay nave with reticulated
tracery, C19 on north side. South Norman doorway with badly weathered
capitals on outer order. C19 shafts and inner order. Blocked north door
with the remains of a Norman arch above and horizontal zig-zag band to left.
2 bay chancel with C19 Y-tracery and light east window. Wall monument to
William Johnstone removed from St. Peter Southgate:- Groups of kneeling
figures facing each other framed by tapered pilasters.
