Railway Station. 1886. John Wilson. Red brick and stucco. Slate and
lead roofs. Ironwork and glass concourse. 2 storeys. 5 bays divided by
double pilasters with window pattern 5:3:4:3:5. The end and central bays
project. The central bay is higher with imposing dome above and porte-
cochere. Horizontal rusticated brickwork to ground floor with paired
sash windows having semi-elliptical pediments with classical decoration
and Keystone. C20 glass doors to foyer. Goods entrance at extreme right.
Rusticated brick piers support the arches of the porte-cochere with turned
balustrading to its flat roof. First floor string band. The first floor
windows in the outer bays have raised and moulded surrounds, with alternating
segmental and triangular pedimente supported on consoles. The 2 bays flanking
the central bay each have a single sash with triangular pediment and 2 paired
sashes with a scroll pediment supported on consoles. Central bay has
Corinthian pilasters and 4 mullion and transome windows with triangular and
broken pediments. Balustrade above with urns and central pedimented clock
gable with classical motifs. Dome with lantern and finial. One surviving
shallow pyramid roof above right-hand bay. Brick corner stacks to each roof.
Classical decoration in foyer having pilasters, decorated frieze cornice and
plasterwork ceiling.
